Redwood ESL

hello and welcome!

Join the Redwood ESL Tutor community and help adults gain confidence in English through online lessons.

If you are looking for a way to help others, you have come to the right place. You can teach English online to individual immigrants from many different cultures. We will train you, provide you with course materials, and match you with one or more students.

Our Mission

We are here to help immigrants improve their English so they can communicate more effectively with their families, pursue more rewarding career opportunities, and apply to schools.

We do this by connecting them with volunteers like you who will set aside a couple of hours each week to work with them online.

You do not need prior teaching experience or ESL certifications to help us help these people.  You guide them to better English, one conversation at a time.

We help you get started by providing personal training, lesson plans, and support materials. Our current program is based on lessons with a tutor and a learner using computers.

Become a Volunteer Tutor — and change a life, one conversation at a time.

We will pair you with Immigrants from around the world, who live in the US, who want to learn English and lead fuller lives in their new home.

Most ESL tutors develop strong relationships with their learners and help their learners substantially improve their lives.

The tutor and the student work together as long as both feel their time together is productive. Once you are paired with a learner, you are the best person to guide the tutoring program.

Our materials and support are available to you, but how you use them is up to you. You can learn more about our program at Redwoodesl.org.

We are a nonprofit organization based in Northern California, funded by a private foundation. We do not charge tutors or learners, and we have designed the program so that neither tutors nor learners need to purchase books or software.

 Meet some of our tutors

Our community of volunteer tutors is growing and we would love to have you with us. Take a look at some of our amazing tutors who are already changing people’s lives, one conversation at a time.

Jennifer

I’m an ESL tutor who is passionate about supporting immigrants as they build confidence in their English skills and establish their lives in the United States. I enjoy creating a comfortable, encouraging space for learners to grow at their own pace.

Sara W.

The English language has always been a passion for me. From the time I was a little girl, I devoured books about everything. And still do!

Several years ago, I tutored ESL students but had to give it up due to lack of time. I recently retired from my accounting career and was looking for a way to give back to the community. Redwood ESL offered me the opportunity to do this.

Jonathan B.

Jonathan B brings a deep love of language, culture, and human connection to his work as an ESL tutor. With a professional background rooted in connecting with a wide range of audiences and clients, Jonathan approaches tutoring as a collaborative and engaging exchange, rather than a one-size-fits-all lesson.
