Here is the streamlined process to start your Volunteer Tutor journey:
Apply Online: Begin by completing our Volunteer Tutor Application Form. We’re excited to learn more about you!
Share Your Style: If we feel we’re a match, you’ll be invited to an online interview.
Get Onboarded: If you’re a great fit for our learners, you will be welcomed into the program and gain access to our self-paced training materials.
Find Your Match: After completing training, we will thoughtfully match you with a learner. You will then arrange your first introductory session together.
Gain Confidence and Support: Check in with our team after your first session to ensure you feel confident, prepared, and ready to continue your tutoring journey.
Make a Difference: Meet with your student at least once a week, adjust the curriculum to fit their learning needs, and witness the impact you’re making! As you grow, you can choose to support additional learners or even lead conversation groups.
Our volunteer requirements:
- Volunteer tutors must be adults (over the age of 21) and reside in the United States.
- No experience or certifications are required. We offer full training and support materials.
- A commitment to the program and your student(s). The one-on-one tutoring program lasts approximately three months through weekly one-hour sessions.
- A nurturing perspective. Many adult English learners face significant challenges and often become discouraged because they don't see their own progress. Your encouragement with homework assignments and even the smallest improvements made during sessions is vital to helping them persist.
- Access to a computer or laptop, reliable internet access, a webcam or built in camera, a microphone (built-in or external), and a quiet space for online tutoring.
- Familiarity with standard online tools such as Google Meet, Google Docs, and email is necessary.
